The DBS update service is the best way of keeping your DBS certificate up to date all the time. Rather than the certificate being specific to a single fixed employer, if you are subscribed to the update service, you will be able to take your certificate with you from employer to employer.
How to register for the DBS update service:
You can register using your DBS application reference number when you apply for your DBS certificate or within 30 days after your certificate has been issued.
Once you have registered for the update service, you will be able to:
– Save your certificate online
– Allow employers or clients permission to check for any changes recorded on your certificate
– View your own details
– See details when someone else checks for changes on your certificate
When is the DBS update service not right for me?
– In certain circumstances, an employer may ask you to get a new check
– The DBS update service may not be appropriate if an employer asks you get a different level of check (for example, you have a Standard DBS and your employer requires you to have an Enahnced DBS)
Your employer or client will tell you what level of DBS certificate they need you to have.

You will be given the option to renew automatically at the point of application. If you don’t do this, you will need to log in and confirm your renewal within 30 days of the end of the 12 months.
